National Geographic is leaving Skys NOW this month

The National Geographic channel, which has been broadcasting in the UK for almost 25 years, will be removed from the Skys streaming service NOW on 28 June 2022. This includes both the linear version of the channel (SD and HD versions) as well as all of National Geographic’s on-demand content on NOW. On the same day, NOW will add a new channel dedicated to crime drama to its mix of UKTV’s Alibi channel. Previously Alibi was only available on Sky (and Virgin Media) but not NOW. While these changes have not yet been officially announced, they have been confirmed by the NOWs team, along with some customers who have received email notifications regarding the upcoming changes.

Owned by Sky, Now is a streaming-only service (see our full NOW review here) that you stream over broadband, with its app available on most streaming devices sold in the UK.

NOW offers several flexible memberships for entertainment (with TV shows and children’s content), cinema and sports. National Geographic is currently part of the NOWs Entertainment membership, which costs $9.99/month.

Switching from National Geographic On-Demand to Disney+?

The linear version of the National Geographic channel has been around in some form since 1997 and focuses on nature, science, and documentaries.

The channel is currently available on various pay TV platforms (so not Freeview or Freesat) such as Sky and Virgin Media, with on-demand content also available on NOW.

The channel was added to NOW back in 2020 as a replacement for Nat Geo Wild. Some of National Geographic’s most popular programs over the years include Air Crash Investigation, Car S.O.S., Running Wild with Bear Grylls, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, and more.

The content has moved to Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, which has its own National Geographic section .

National Geographic’s removal from NOW is similar to the closure of The Fox Channel last year (with shows like The Walking Dead moving to Disney+), as well as The Disney Channel, which closed in 2020 and whose content found a new home on Disney+ .
